California-based tech giant Apple has recently filed a patent with the U.S. Patent and trademark office for a new charging case for its hugely popular AirPods which features a fully interactive display. The Patent describes how the touch display offers media control, and access to apps and notifications. Users might also be able to switch between the apps using the Siri Prompts. The touch display will also be able to transfer a song from the AirPods to the homePods via handoff. According to the patent, filed in September 2022, the AirPods charging case could include a touchscreen display on the front, similar to that of an Apple Watch. Apple sketched out the device, and can be said as headphone-case-meets-pocket-computer with a touchscreen display ,feature of flicking through songs, watching movies, peeping the weather or even navigating somewhere via a mapping app. While a display on AirPods may affect the battery, parts of the patent show that the touch screen could be used to change the earbuds’ volume with a circular swiping movement reminiscent of the iconic iPod’s click wheel function. Last year Apple officially put an end to the iPod after more than 20 years. The company said music lives on in its other products, such as the iPhone, HomePod, and of course the AirPods. Perhaps adding some basic functionality to Apple’s wireless earbuds could be a way to revive the iPod in the modern era. Put another way, Apple invented the iPod all over again. Although, The iPhone and MacBook maker is yet to issue a formal statement on the development or confirm whether such a product will even be manufactured soon.
