In a landmark ruling, the Andhra Pradesh High Court has set a precedent that could revolutionise the way mathematical equations and scientific principles are treated in legal terms. The court’s recent declaration states that since mathematical equations and science subjects are founded on immutable laws of nature, every individual is inherently authorised to utilise them without apprehension of copyright infringement.

This ruling came about in response to a case where a researcher was sued for reproducing a set of mathematical equations originally published in a scientific journal without obtaining permission from the copyright holder.

However, the High Court, in its wisdom, emphasised that these equations, being expressions of fundamental truths governing the universe, cannot be monopolised by any individual or entity.

Justice Aruna Kumari, who presided over the case, delivered a profound opinion highlighting the essence of scientific knowledge as a common heritage of humanity. “Mathematical equations and scientific principles are not products of human creativity in the conventional sense; rather, they are discoveries of pre-existing truths embedded in the fabric of the universe,” remarked Justice Kumari.
