Ford's Vision for the Future: Transforming Cars into Mobile Workspaces
Ford has unveiled an ambitious new vision for in-car functionality, with patents revealing innovative designs to convert vehicle interiors into mobile workspaces. Dubbed the “coffice” (car office), these designs aim to transform dashboards into desks, allowing drivers and passengers to work comfortably from their vehicles.
Concept
The recently published patents, filed in 2022, demonstrate various configurations that seamlessly integrate workspaces into the existing car cabin. The designs feature fold-out desks and sliding panels that transform the dashboard into a functional work area without compromising its original form when the car is in motion. One notable feature includes a foldable steering wheel that creates a flat desk surface, ideal for a laptop or paperwork.
The design also incorporates an extending section from the center console with a single table leg for stability, ensuring the workspace can support heavy items or leaning. Additionally, the passenger side offers an L-shaped corner desk with extra support from table legs secured to the center console.
Ford’s Previous Efforts in Mobile Workspaces
This isn’t Ford’s first foray into mobile workspaces. In 2022, they introduced the battery-powered E-Transit Custom with a ‘Mobile Office’ option pack, which includes a tilting steering wheel that converts into a small desk, dimmable LED lighting, and extra storage for paperwork and devices.
Repurposing Engine Bays in EVs
Ford’s vision extends beyond the vehicle’s interior. Another patent reveals plans to utilise the vacant engine bays in electric vehicles (EVs). Traditionally used as crumple zones, these spaces can be repurposed for additional storage or entertainment centers. Patent drawings show an electric F-150 Lightning with a TV screen mounted on the underside of the bonnet lid, turning the front boot (or “froot”) into a space where owners can watch content while waiting for their EVs to charge.Additionally, the froot can be transformed into a construction worker’s tool station, complete with fold-out worktops, cup holders, and an electricity supply for power tools. For business users, the space can serve as a standing desk with power outlets for laptops and other devices.
Future Prospects
While it remains uncertain if these innovative concepts will make it to production, Ford’s commitment to reimagining vehicle interiors is evident.
